Eugenics Statement

We should acknowledge that higher education was founded on and often funded by eugenics.
Disabled folks have been systematically excluded from–and harmed by– higher education and academia.
Measures of intelligence as biased, and the whole notion that higher education is reserved for the “best and brightest” has perpetuated real harm to many disabled people.
We have an image here of disabled activists crawling and dragging themselves up the stairs of the U.S. Capitol Building in 1990 demanding passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
We can also use this image to show the metaphorical struggles by disabled students, faculty, and staff at colleges and universities that don’t prioritize accessibility.
